Hi Everyone, it’s Kristy from Clearly Legal.

I wanted to talk with you today about what you should expect when you hire a great freelance law clerk—and why the right support can make all the difference for your legal practice.

After more than 20 years in the legal industry, 17 of these years spent in law firms and legal offices learning, I have learned what it takes to be a strong, reliable member of any legal team— whether you are 9-5 or a freelancer, or somewhere in between. Here are a few of the key things I bring to the table that I believe every experienced freelance law clerk should offer:

1. Speaking “Legalese” Naturally

Legal terms and procedures should feel like second nature. Your freelancer should already be fluent in legalese, like I am. This means I can read, write, and speak about files confidently, professionally and accurately, and with anyone.

2. Professional Communication for Freelancers

I am comfortable picking up the phone or writing on your behalf. Your freelancer should be able to communicate for you without having to learn how, the only learning should be about your specific office preferences. Whether it is calling the court, emailing opposing counsel, or speaking with clients or process servers, I know how to handle it with professionalism and in both in plain english and legalese.

3. Managing a Project Start to Finish

When I take on a file, I keep you updated regularly. You should get updates without having to ask. You do not need to chase me for progress—clear communication is just part of my process.

4. Deep Knowledge of Law and Forms

I know how to work with the legislation, rules, and court forms that apply in various areas of law, for me - this started in high school. That means less hand-holding and more action—I am ready to get the job done.

5. Solving the Complicated

If something seems confusing or tricky, I know how to dive in and figure it out; I know where to start and the questions to ask. That is part of the job—and something I have grown confident in through years of hands-on experience.
